I showed up a few minutes later than I wanted to and saw my worse nightmare happening in front of me, a bunch of little kids in lacrosse uniforms on the fields. Thankfully, they didnt use all the fields. Scott Mathieu gave all the captains their team t-shirts which I think might be our best ever. Big thanks to Thea Drew who came up with the neat Rhode Island outline inside the P of RIPUL. I bet most of you didnt notice that. Also thanks to Chad Johnson for helping on the design and Scotty for dealing with the t-shirt order. On to the games..... #2 Berry Red v. #6 Gold Gold is lead by Scotty and Brian Sheehan, an old-time chowdahead now back in Rhode Island after an at least 5 year world tour. Berry Red is lead by Phil "Flip" Williams who has been commuting from Woods Hole the past 4 years because he loves RIPUL so much. Unfortunately for Flip and his team, he and 3 of his teammates also from Woods Hole got tied up in traffic because of that big oil spill on Route 28 yesterday afternoon and didn't get there until near the end of the first half when Gold was already up 8-0 and took half at 9-1. Berry Red had a skeleton crew so this game isn't a good indicator how strong this team will be when all their guns show up. Gold played real well, especially considering it was just the 1st game. Scotty lead the troops as he will I'm sure all summer but we received major contributions from everybody. Eric McAndrew scored a bunch of goals and was a major factor on O. Steve Canon, Mike Troup, Bill Sanford, Samir Gupta, and newcomer drew Cahill all were involved in the O. Bill had a couple of nice D plays and Samir had a sick grab. OTOH, I only dropped 3 passes, including a simple catch wide open in the end zone. For the women, Kara D'Avanzo threw a lovely a forehand blade to her hubby Sheehan and really helped out handling. Mary Chan made a bunch of D's, Amanda Dauphinee was generally solid, Daphna Buchshbaum caught a bunch of hucks, and Sarah Cornell contributed as well. Final score 17-5 Gold. #1 Key Lime v. #5 Purple Key Lime is lead by Dan Cogan and Thea Drew. Purple is lead by Fred Orwiller. This game was held up at the Moses Brown tennis court field and word is that this field was even more comfortable to run on than usual. The game didnt get going until 7:00 PM because I wasnt up there to push the teams to get going but oh well it was the 1st game and teams wanted to meet and greet. This game was nip and tuck throughout and the game was tied at 13 when the captains agreed to cap it at 15 because of darkness. Dr. Bill Binder threw a flick to a streaking Charles Marlio who dug the low throw out for a nice catch and the score. I forget who scored the winning goal but I do recall being told that Megan Nolan was a scoring machine. Russell Neale the mystery draft pick really helped Purple and Jesse Kerceval has improved by leaps and bounds since we last saw him in RIPUL 2 years ago. As for Key Lime, their women are pretty solid lead by Thea and her sister Ms. Libby, as well as Mara Gotsik who was described as "fast as a gazelle," Jaime Olson who plays with the Brown women, and Erika Steele. Final score 15-13 Purple. #4 Pine v. #8 White Pine is lead by Evan Pearce, a URI player, and Bob "Vette" Vtromile, a long-time chowdahead. White is lead by Olivier Humblet and Peri Kurshan, both Brown players. This game was pretty close in the first half but White was able to pull away in the second hald for a 17-10 victory. I don't know too much about what happened in this game, sorry guys. #3 Denim v. #7 Black Denim is lead by Rich "Chia" Lucia, a long-time Chowdahead, and Scott Wiant, a URI student who wasnt able to show last night. Black is lead by Moses Rifkin and Sarah Cook, both Brown students. This was the game of the night. It was nip and tuck all game with both teams playing good disc, especially for the 1st game of the season. It was 12-11 I think Black was ahead when the sprinklers decided to go off. Luckily, the Berry Red and Gold game was just finishing up so Denim and Black moved over to that field to finish the game and it was quite a finish. The Greg Altimas of Black and Eric Kim of Denim was a real good matchup. Tim McBride of Denim played his heart out trying to stay with Moses and did a decent job of keeping him under control. Timmy made a big grab for a score late in the game. Black's women are very athletic. Kat Saxton is just a beginner but she is a major factor with her great speed and she marks really well. Maureen Fitzgerald is another great athlete who although a beginner can definitely help. Same for Alika Crew. Yvonne Boogaerts also of Black I saw made a nice throw for a score late in the game. Denim's women are also solid lead by Betsy Stubblefield and Kali Cheung. As a side note, I am really excited by how good the women in RIPUL are this year. Last year teams only had between 4 and 5 women but this year we have between 5 and 6. Every team I saw had women contributing and touching the disc alot on O, including beginners, and that's great. Anyway, score was tied at 16 and Denim had the disc about 15 yards from the end zone. Nathan Jepson of Denim threw it to somebody (sorry, forgot who) for the win. Pretty exciting game and very competitive. Nice job both teams. Also, I saw alot of people didnt bring water with them. Everybody should be bringing a half-gallon to a gallon of water especially on hot nights. Staying hydrated is extremely important for good health and good performance. For those that have not paid, please do so by Wednesday or I will have no problem not allowing you to play. I should not be forced to find you and play bill collector. You should be finding me and paying up. It's not fair to the vast majority who paid on time and its not fair to me who has enough on my plate as is running this league.
