On to the action: Pine 17 Berry Red 15 (by Eric Weis of Pine) On an undersized field, where the long game was very tempting, the difference ended up being the short game. Green (aka The Team Formerly Known As Pine) led for most of the game, but never by more than 3 points. When the score hit 15-12, Green was looking to lock it up when Red's quick and talented players turned up the heat on both defense and offense, and hit three straight scores to draw even. As the sun fell below the horizon, Green managed to score two straight to finish up the game. The real story behind Green's game was the fact that only 2 of their womencame (Sarah Towne and Meredith Visco) and played every point of the game. Their endurance was remarkable, as they remained at full speed (and full skill) the entire evening. Hats off to them! DENIM 16 KEY LIME 13 (by Rich "Chia" Lucia, Captain of Denim) Another great game for both teams. Key Lime started the game off with a ZONE D, which at first gave DENIM fits. DENIM regrouped (whatever that means) down 3-1 and with some patience and some great grabs by Tim McBride was able to score against the ZONE D. Also some great handling by Molly C. and Betsy S. helped Denim get on a roll. Denim's women also contributed with great mid cuts to get open and slow down the CUP. Denim took half at 9-4 and it looked like it might finally be an easy game for DENIM. However, Key Lime came storming back and cut Denims lead to only 2 points at 12-10 with some great play by Scott Martin in particular . Also some sick grabs by Mara Gotsik and solid play overall. Denim held on and it got too dark too reach 17 points. PURPLE 17 BLACK 11 (by Moses Rifkin, Captain of Black) Purple opened up a 6-0 lead with a zone D (with 6 people) that gave Black fits. When Black finally got on track, it was too late: several runs brought it within 2, I think, but we never got close enough. Russell Neale and Karen Binder played very well for Purple, as well as the usual suspects of Bob Yakota and Mike "Chowda" Schein. On the Black team, Kevin Nagle and Kirk Kaczor continued to play like veterans, Dave Gondek got a sweet layout block, and Yvonne was 100% solid. GOLD 17 WHITE 10 In a battle of the remaining unbeatens, White stormed out to a quick 3-0 lead with some effective hucking. Gold quickly rebounded to tie the game up at 3 behind a strong zone D. White was up 5-4 but Gold took half at 9-7. Opening the 2nd half, Gold received and set up a play to hit a streaking Eric McAndrew for the score. Eric was open, the throw was on target, but it was misread. Gold got the disc back and again quickly hucked from Mike Dussault to Captain Scotty. Scotty was also open and the throw was on target, but Scotty's feet refused to leave the ground. 3rd time was a charm and Gold was finally able to punch it in. Next point saw Mike Dussault connect with a steaking Daphna B. for the score. Gold's zone D was very effective. They were playing 3 women in the cup. Gold's women, Kara, Mary, Daphna, Sarah, and Amanda, all played another very solid game. Amanda hustled down and made a sweet D on a 1st throw off the pull in White's end zone which lead to a quick score from Dussault to Eric in which Eric was wide open but the throw was behind him. He quickly adjusted and made a pretty tough catch look easy. On the point before, off a set play, Brian Sheehan threw a hammer to Eric which Eric was able to snag by reaching over the shoulder of the defender and grabbing it one-handed. As strong as he was on O last night, Eric was even stronger on D. Besides a bunch of routine D plays, he had a point block on the Gold goal line (Steve Canon had a nice point block for Gold as well). Late in the game, on the same point, he had two sweet D plays where he was able to beat the speedy Alan Lapre back to the disc.
